case study

The Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC) is proof that collaboration truly breeds innovation. A unique research initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, CSMC’s green chemistry program is a model for educational outreach and industry innovation.

A partnership between ONAMI, Oregon State University, the University of Oregon and four other major universities, CSMC harnesses the expertise and cooperation of researchers to inspire curiosity-driven and use-inspired research—all in the name of developing high-performance, inorganic electronic devices rooted in benign chemistry platforms.

The results? Innovations like electronic switches that outperform the fastest silicon-based semiconductors and water-based manufacturing techniques that reduce waste and improve productivity. The center has spun off two startup companies, generated more than a dozen U.S. patents and prepared numerous students for careers in chemical innovation.
