2014 Willamette Angel Conference: A showcase of great ideas in Oregon

UPDATE May 9, 2014:  Energy Storage Systems has won the 2014 Willamette Angel Conference, with an expected investment of at least $265,000.

ONAMI is pleased to be a sponsor of the 6th Annual Willamette Angel Conference 2014, held this year in Eugene, Oregon, at the University of Oregon’s Ford Alumni Center, on Thursday, May 8. A pre-conference kick-off reception (admission included in the conference registration) will be held the preceding evening at Palo Alto Sotware in downtown Eugene.

The Willamette Angel Conference, LLC is a structured, investor-driven angel fund comprised of accredited investors. Conference leadership encourages veteran and new angel investors to learn by doing, therefore increasing the number of active local angel investors and funded Oregon start-up companies for a strong regional economy. Educational and networking sessions throughout the year provide background and context for private investors.

ONAMI gap fund companies Applied ExergyDune Sciences and Energy Storage Systems are all WAC 2014 semifinalists.

Cascade Prodrug, another ONAMI gap gund company, and Sonivate, a new startup that ONAMI is currently working with, were the winners of the 2012 and 2013 WACs raising $200K and $295K, respectively.

Attendance at the WAS offers:

  • Valuable Coaching—Early applicants have several opportunities to pitch, improve, and perfect their business plan through practice, training, and advisory sessions. Finalists receive valuable coaching from the selection committee on preparing the business pitch. Companies who are not chosen as finalists have an opportunity to compete in a concept stage round for cash award.
  • Feedback from Angel and Venture Capital Investors—Presenters at the conference will be critiqued and get feedback from a panel of experts qualified to coach founders of growth-oriented companies.
  • Speaker Insight—All applicants have access to a business pitch clinic. Refining a business pitch is not only for obtaining investment capital but also learning how to talk about your business in a way that is clear and easy to understand.Quick pitches get noticed.
  • Networking Opportunities—Companies not chosen to present will have the opportunity to network with an audience of angel investors, experienced institutional investors, and participate in the Concept Stage round for a cash award.

This year’s keynote speaker, Mat Ellis, is CEO and Founder of Cloudability, a cloud management company that helps businesses save money on their cloud costs by reducing unintentional spending and eliminate waste. As a hands-on executive with over 20 years experience scaling and growing technology platforms, Ellis spent the nineties overseeing IT operations for global companies like Goldman Sachs, Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola. He has held executive positions with four startups since 2000, including three with successful exits. The fourth, Adknowledge, is the largest privately held ad network in the world. He also served as VP of Technology for Connexus Corp. More recently, he founded the cloud computing consultancy Tecnh in 2009, where his main focus was to help move companies onto the cloud. Originally hailing from the UK, Ellis now resides in Portland, Oregon.
