Gain critical experience assessing business startups with ONAMI

The University of Oregon’s Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and the Lundquist College of Business are partnering with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) to offer experiential learning opportunities that connect business students to Oregon’s innovation ecosystem. ONAMI provides critical support to early-stage startups, including pre-seed/seed funding, acceleration services, and collaboration on federal research initiatives such as NSF Regional Innovation Engines and EDA Tech Hubs.

This internship allows students to contribute to ONAMI’s Centers of Innovation Excellence (CIE) while developing skills in venture evaluation, startup acceleration, and investment decision-making. Interns will be paired with an ONAMI Entrepreneur in Residence or staff member, depending on the task.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and compile reports (using AI, UO library, other tools) on the state of our sector(s) - deep tech, early-stage VC.
  • Be assigned to portfolio companies for agreed-upon tasks.
  • Assist in the due diligence process for evaluating startups (market research, financial review, business model analysis).
  • Support startup acceleration services, including pitch preparation, financial modeling, and growth strategies.
  • Gain exposure to venture capital decision-making processes and risk assessment methods.
  • Help coordinate innovation events hosted at 942 Olive Innovation Hub in Eugene.
  • Collaborate with OVPRI and ONAMI staff to connect early-stage investment with federal funding competitiveness.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Explain how venture capital and seed funding support innovation-driven startups.
  • Conduct and interpret market and financial analyses.
  • Understand the role of startup acceleration in securing federal research funding.
  • Build practical skills in teamwork, critical analysis, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Strong interest in entrepreneurship, venture finance, and innovation-driven business.
  • Demonstrated analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Commitment of ~8 hours/week for three academic terms.
  • Desirable qualification: background/experience in the sciences – particularly Life Science, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals; Energy Generation and Storage & Cleantech Water; and Advanced Materials, Semiconductors & Optics

Additional Details

  • Up to 10 students will be selected annually.
  • Work will take place primarily at 942 Olive (Eugene) with opportunities to engage with ONAMI staff in Corvallis and some remote work.
  • This is an unpaid internship; scholarship support and/or academic credit may be available.
