The number of employees at ESS Inc. has more than doubled in the past 18 months, to around 100. But what stands out on its Wilsonville factory floor are the yellow, multi-axis robots, swiveling and lifting and dipping components into place, building the battery modules that are at the heart of the company’s product.

The intensely competitive battery energy storage sector will always require cost and efficiency improvements, but at a fundamental level, ESS is past looking for a technology breakthrough.

"That’s what that initial 10 years was for," said CEO Craig Evans, who started ESS in his garage with Julia Song, the company's chief technology officer, in 2011.
