The citation reads:
ONAMI (the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute) will receive the Partners for Progress and Prosperity Award for Exemplary Partnerships in the Chemical Enterprise. Founded in 2003, ONAMI is Oregon’s first “signature research center,” dedicated to commercializing scientific research into successful new Oregon companies. Since the inception of its commercialization gap fund in late 2006, ONAMI has invested over $11M in commercialization projects and company investments in multiple sectors including semiconductors, advanced materials, medical devices, and precision agriculture. These investments have resulted in over $425M in financial leverage, of which approximately 90% is private capital investment. ONAMI currently focuses on starting companies from the earliest stages, providing initial executive leadership, market research, team building, business and financial planning, and investment-raising support. These activities expose the criticality of business people and investors better understanding how academia, research careers, and federal funding programs work and academics better understanding the full commercialization and business management process, including intellectual property, company ownership and control, and investor/lender requirements for downstream financings. The award will be accepted by Skip Rung, ONAMI’s founding President and Executive Director..
